Mental Health Illness
Mental illness is a term that describes a broad range of mental and emotional conditions. The most common forms of mental health illness are mood disorders and anxiety disorders.
These illnesses are characterized by periods of depression, sometimes alternating with periods of elevated mood. With therapy individuals with this disorder is able to deal with these mood swings in a positive and productive manner.
Major depression affects over 15 million American adults in a given year. Unlike normal emotional experiences of sadness, loss or passing mood states, major depression is persistent and can significantly interfere with an individual’s thoughts, behavior, mood, activity and physical health.
Bipolar disorder is a condition that can affect both how you feel and act. It is a mood disorder in which people exhibit extreme swings in mood- from manic highs and depressive lows usually in a short period.
Dysthymia – This is where an individual may be able to function in their day-to-day life but never feels quite right. They may report feeling like they’ve been depressed all their lives or say they feel like they are just barely managing to keep their head above water.
These disorders are the most common group of mental illness and are characterized by severe fear or anxiety associated with particular objects and situations.
Panic disorder is the sudden onset of paralyzing terror or impending doom with symptoms that closely resemble a heart attack. Phobias are excessive fear of particular objects. Social phobias are situations that expose a person to the possible judgment of others. Agoraphobia is fear of situations where escape might be difficult. Post-traumatic disorder (PTSD) can occur after you have seen or experienced a traumatic event that involves the threat of injury or death.
This is where an individual treats a relationship like it is more important than them. This individual can also be described as an enabler. Enabling another in their addictive lifestyle is commonly associated with a co-dependent individual.
Substance Abuse Recovery This is where individuals with substance abuse addictions are provided tools to overcome their addiction and maintain sobriety.Our goal is to assist each individual in identifying his or her trigger/triggers leading to substance abuse and provide coping skills to overcome and prevent relapse.

Crisis intervention is focused on minimizing the stress of an event, providing emotional support and improving the individual’s coping strategies in the here and now. We not only assess the situation, but educate, offer support and assist the individual in developing coping skills to deal with the event that triggers a crisis.
Adults/Adolescent with Special Needs
(e.g. Autism, Asperger disorders) Autism is a developmental disability that interferes with a person’s ability to communicate and socialize. With autism, the different areas of the brain fail to work together. Autism affects each person differently and to varying degrees of severity.
Asperger’s Syndrome relates to individuals that generally have normal intelligence and near-normal language development, although they do have socialization, communication and at times minimal use of imagination. Individuals with autism and Asperger Syndrome do benefit from therapy focusing on communication and socializing skills.
